Then we will discuss the flow of gameplay and what decisions players need to make in order to win. Finally, we will explain how the dealer deals cards and how a winner is determined. Are you ready to learn everything there is to know about blackjack? Let's get started!
Blackjack is a popular casino game that is played with a deck of 52 cards. The objective of the game is to beat the dealer's hand by having a higher point total than the dealer without going over 21. Players will start by placing their bets. The dealer will then deal two cards to each player and two cards to themselves. One of the dealer's cards will be face up and the other will be face down.
In blackjack, face cards are worth ten, numbered cards are worth whatever number they represent (five equals five, six equals six, etc.), and an ace can be worth 1 or 11. The value of an ace depends on the cards in your hand. The ace becomes whatever value doesn't put the total hand over 21. So, if you have a face card and an ace, you have "ten plus eleven equals twenty-one (10 + 11 = 21)". That's called blackjack and you are a winner!
After the deal, players will then have a number of options. They can choose to hit, which means they will receive another card from the dealer. They can choose to stand, which means they will not receive any more cards. They can also choose to double down, which means they will double their bet and receive one more card. Or, they can choose to split, which means they will split their cards into two separate hands and receive an additional card for each hand. You can only split cards of the same value.
Once all players have finished making their decisions, the dealer will reveal their face down card. They will then hit or stand based on the value of their hand. If the dealer has 16 or less, they will always hit. If the dealer has 17 or more, they will always stand. Some casinos have varying rules and changing the rules changes the advantage for the casino.
If a player goes over 21, they "bust" and lose their bet. If the dealer busts, all players who are still in the hand win their bet.
The game of blackjack is won by having a higher point total than the dealer without going over 21. Blackjack pays 3 to 2, meaning if you bet $10 and win, you will be paid $15. If the dealer has blackjack, they will automatically win unless all players also have blackjack, in which case it is a push and no one wins or loses.
